What can auto insurance actually help with?

"Auto insurance" is a bundle of separate coverages. Each one answers a different question: whose car, whose injuries, what kind of damage. Follow the road and open each stop.

Quick read

The practical part

You misjudge a gap while parking and dent another car, or clip someone's fence. Liability coverage, where included, may help with repairs to someone else's car or belongings, within the amounts your policy sets.

Worth checkingHow much liability coverage you have for others' belongings.

The practical part

After a collision, people may need medical care. Depending on the policy and the situation, bodily injury liability may address injuries you cause to others, while coverages such as medical expense coverage or personal injury protection, where available, may help with medical expenses for you and your passengers.

Worth checkingWhich injury and medical coverages are listed, and how much each includes.

The practical part

You slide into a pole on a wet road, or another car hits yours and drives off. Collision coverage, where selected, may help repair your own car after a collision with a vehicle or object, after your deductible.

Worth checkingYour collision deductible, and whether it fits comfortably in your budget.

The practical part

Your car is stolen from a street parking spot, or hail cracks the windshield overnight. Comprehensive coverage, where included, may address theft, weather and other covered events that are not a collision.

Worth checkingWhich events are listed, and the deductible that applies to them.

The practical part

Some policies offer options such as roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement, or coverage for collisions with drivers who carry too little insurance. They apply only when they are part of the coverage you selected.

Worth checkingThe optional coverages listed on your policy documents.

Check the amounts

What applies depends on the coverage you choose, its amounts, deductibles and policy terms.

Who actually needs lifeinsurance?

Quick read

Start with who relies on your money, not with your birthday. Read each situation and ask whether it describes you today. If one does, life coverage is worth a closer look.

Shared lease · shared plans

If this is you01 / 05

Someone depends on your income.

A partner covers rent with you, or you send money to a parent every month. A life policy provides a benefit to the people you name, which may help replace income they rely on.

Worth checkingHow many years of support they would need.

If this is you02 / 05

You share major financial obligations with another person.

A joint lease, a co-signed car loan, a mortgage in two names. If your share stopped, the other person could still owe the full amount.

Worth checkingThe balances and end dates of what you share.

If this is you03 / 05

You have children or other dependents.

Children, a relative you care for, anyone whose daily costs you cover. Their expenses keep going for years: school, food, housing, care.

Worth checkingWho you name as beneficiary, and who would manage money for a minor.

If this is you04 / 05

You have bills or shared commitments someone else might have to sort out.

Shared obligations, final expenses and unpaid bills can land on someone you care about. A policy benefit may give them some breathing room while they take care of it.

Worth checkingWhich of your commitments are shared with someone else.

If this is you05 / 05

Your household would change a lot without your income.

If your income covers most of the groceries, the car and the weekend plans, it's worth thinking about how your household would adjust without it.

Worth checkingThe monthly costs your income supports today.

Age is one detail. Responsibility tells you more.

The amount and length of coverage that fit depend on who relies on you and for how long. Benefits are paid subject to policy terms.

When is travel insurance worth considering?

Before you go

Look at how the trip is built, not just where it goes. These six characteristics make travel coverage more relevant.

Non-refundable arrangements

A hotel or tour that keeps your money if you cancel. Trip cancellation benefits, where included, may reimburse covered non-refundable costs when you cancel for a reason the policy lists.

03

International travel

Your health plan at home may work differently, or not at all, in another country. Travel medical benefits, where included, may help with covered care while you are abroad.

04

Multiple flights or connections

Every connection is one more chance for a missed flight or a bag that arrives later than you do. Delay and baggage benefits, if part of the policy, may help with covered costs.

Significant prepaid plans

A wedding abroad, a group trip, a road trip with every stop booked. If you have to head home early, the unused part can go to waste. Trip interruption benefits, where included, may reimburse covered unused arrangements.

Coverage amounts. What does your policy include?

Knowing what a policy includes is half of it. The other half is where it stops. Drag the Coverage Edge to read four terms that set those boundaries.

A · Amount
B · Deductible
C · Exclusion
D · Condition
A / 04

Amount

The most a policy may contribute toward a covered situation or category, often listed as a limit.

If a covered repair costs more than this amount, the difference may be yours to cover. Policies can set separate amounts per person, per incident or per category.

Check the amount

B / 04

Deductible

The amount you cover first, before applicable coverage contributes.

Example: on a covered repair, your deductible comes first, and coverage may contribute toward the rest, up to your coverage amount. A higher deductible usually means a larger share is yours when you file.

Worth checking

C / 04

Exclusion

A situation the policy does not include.

Normal wear and tear on a car, or certain adventure activities on a trip, may appear as exclusions. They are listed in your policy document, usually in their own section.

Read the list

D / 04

Policy condition

A requirement or rule that can affect how coverage applies.

Letting your insurer know within a set time, or listing every regular driver on an auto policy. These details can shape how a request is handled.

Know the rules

Examples are illustrative. Actual coverage amounts, deductibles, exclusions and conditions depend on the policy you select.

Questions worth asking before you choose

Take these to any policy you are comparing. The answers tell you more than the price alone.

AutoQ.01

Who is covered when someone else drives my car?

Friends, roommates, a partner borrowing the car for a weekend. Ask how the policy treats other drivers.

AutoQ.02

Which types of damage to my own vehicle are included?

Collision and comprehensive are often separate choices. Check which ones are on the policy.

AutoQ.03

What deductible feels right for me?

Ask for the amount per coverage, then see how it fits your budget.

LifeQ.04

Would someone depend financially on me if my income disappeared?

If the answer is yes, life coverage is worth a closer look.

LifeQ.05

Who are my current beneficiaries?

Confirm the names and shares on every policy you hold.

TravelQ.06

Which parts of my next trip are prepaid or non-refundable?

Add them up before you compare travel benefits.

Auto / Life / TravelQ.07

What does my coverage include?

See how much each coverage includes, then compare it with what matters to you and what you've booked.

Know what you're choosing before you move on to the next thing.
